This award is
commonly called a Gallipoli Star in English or Eiserner Halbmond (Iron
Crescent ) in German. This Turkish award was instituted on March 1st 1915 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed
Reshad V as an award for gallantry and was similar to the German Iron Cross in terms of
criteria.Turkey fought on the side of the central powers (Germany and
Austro-Hungary) and so Germans and Austrians were eligible for this
award.
