This award is commonly called a Gallipoli Star in English or Eiserner Halbmond (Iron Crescent ) in German. This Turkish award was instituted on March 1st  1915 by the Ottoman Sultan Mehmed Reshad V as an award for gallantry and was similar to the  German Iron Cross in terms of criteria.Turkey fought on the side of the central powers (Germany and Austro-Hungary) and so Germans and Austrians were eligible for this award.
